This book is a biography of Elwood Decker, a Dunite and artist who lived in the Oceano Dunes for thirteen years. It serves as a companion volume to the author's first book, The Dunites. The Dunites were a group of artists, writers, poets, philosophers, religious mystics, aristocrats, and free spirits who lived in the dunes of Oceano from the early 1900s until 1974. The era of the Dunites ended in 1974 with the passing of Bert Schievink who was the last Dunite still living in the dunes. Much of this book is taken from the writings of Elwood and from conversations between him and his friend, the author. Elwood's words provide an excellent portrayal of what living in the dunes was like for him and the other people who once lived there.

Norm Hammond is the last steward of the stories of the Dunites. This book is an incredible read documenting the history of a fixture of San Luis Obispo county history. Well done!
Outstanding! While Mr. Hammond's first work on the Dunites of Oceano Dunes will always be my favorite, this sequel provides much more information on Elwood Decker - a long-time resident of Oceano and friend to many who still live on the Central Coast.
Wonderfully written, well researched account of the life of Elwood Decker...gives even more insight into the lives of the fascinating group of people who were the Dunites.
